Discover the Magic of the Enchantments—With the Right Gear

The Enchantments are legendary for a reason—alpine lakes, granite peaks, wild goats, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in Washington. But with challenging trails, a permit lottery, and rapidly changing mountain weather, planning your Enchantments adventure takes more than a map.
That’s where we come in. As local hikers and backpackers, we’ve been there (blisters and all!). Here’s our honest, field-tested gear guide—so you can focus on the adventure, not the guesswork.

Enchantments Hike Snapshot

  • Distance: 18–20 miles (thru-hike), shorter options for day trips

Pro Tips for a Smooth Enchantments Trip

  • Permits: Apply early for the Core Zone lottery. Shoulder season = better odds. [Official permit info →]
  • Weather: Prepare for sun, snow, and everything in between—sometimes in one day!
  • Water: Streams are plentiful, but always filter. Bring a backup filter or tablets.
  • Leave No Trace: Pack it in, pack it out. The Enchantments are fragile—help keep them wild.
  • Navigation: Bring a map, GPS, and extra phone battery. Trails can be hard to follow in snow or fog.

What About Dogs?

  • Core Enchantments: No dogs allowed (strictly enforced).
  • Surrounding Zones: Dogs are allowed, but be prepared for rugged terrain and rocky scrambles.
  • Dog Gear: If you’re exploring nearby trails, see our dog hiking essentials for safe, fun adventures with your pup.
